Quite proud that we were able to help out a conservation project last week.
Not just with some technical assistance, mapping the work completed, but also getting hands dirty.
So what occured? We got the chance to assist with the building of dams on a natural peat-bog in north Lancashire. These dams trap water and sediment, slowing the flow of the water and storing more of it in the peat. This raises the water table providing the conditions necessary for bogs to develop again.
Why are peat bogs important?
They are a carbon store – peat holds more carbon than the combined forests of Britain, France and Germany
They provide a habitat for wildlife – many scarce species inhabit peatlands
The support water management – peat holds up to 20 times its own weight in water
